drumHeart is WDC’s founding performance ensemble.

drumHeart performs an exciting mix of global rhythms, drawing inspiration from Brazilian samba‑reggae, Jamaican and funk grooves, Haitian music, and West African drumming traditions. The ensemble also honors drumming influences rooted in North American women’s traditions. Through this rich musical diversity, drumHeart creates dynamic performances that celebrate rhythm as a universal language and leave audiences energized and inspired. Known for powerful, rhythm-driven performances, drumHeart brings people together through music at community events, walks, runs, fundraisers, and concerts. The ensemble’s roots began with Brazilian samba and Caribbean traditions and have grown over time through each director’s vision, original compositions, and distinctive arrangements.

Alexandra Ray

Alexandra Ray is a drum and rhythm practitioner who is constantly exploring the intersection of rhythm and nature. She started playing the drums over 18 years ago and has developed an interest in world percussion. She plays many different types of drums and her current practice integrates the healing rhythms of the drum with mindfulness and gratitude around nature. Alex has been a member of several percussion groups and performance ensembles in Georgia, Texas, and Minnesota. She is the director of the drumHeart festival ensemble and teaches a variety of drum classes and workshops at the Women’s Drum Center. She is excited to share, learn and drum with others!
