“She’s Got the Beat”  An All Women’s Drum Set Concert
Saint Paul,  MN - The Women’s Drum Center is proud to announce that on Saturday
November 5th, 2011 at Saint Catherine University’s Jeanne d’Arc Auditorium from 7 to 9 PM they will be hosting an all female drum set concert. This activity is made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council  from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature.
This concert was formed from an idea that Mary, a participant at the Women’s Drum Center, suggested last fall.  She suggested that the Women’s Drum Center should do a concert featuring women playing drum sets.  Over the last year Mary along with others sought out a grant, women drum set players, and a location to hold this fantastic concert.  Women from all over Minnesota were asked to participate and play in this concert and any age and ability level was sought out so that a diverse population of female drummers could be seen at this concert.
Women like Chris Cinque who when asked why she was participating in this concert said,  “Anytime opportunities are provided to see women in unexpected places doing unexpected things, like drum kit drumming and soccer, girls and other women can believe in themselves and be inspired to try new things.”  and Sarah, a fifteen year old taking part in this concert, said “When I was asked if I wanted to participate in an all women’s drum set concert I was excited!  I don’t have to worry about guy’s telling me that I’m not as good as they are, because it’s all women!  It sounded like it would be a fun experience no matter what happened, and I look forward to playing (in the concert).”
This concert is also opening up doors for women who never thought that they would play the drums, such as Patty who said, “I didn’t even consider drumming as an option as a young girl.  My father played when he was a teenager, but everyone at my school and everyone I ever saw playing the drums was male.  I didn’t start drumming until this year.  I love the idea of letting girls know that drumming is something that they can choose without it being a “boys” instrument”.
Those helping with the behind the scenes details are hoping to fill Jeanne d’ Arc Auditorium and show that there is a need for this type of concert in the Twin Cities.  The concert is not only about featuring women drummers, but also the history of the drum set and the history of women and drumming.
The concert will include rock, jazz, blues, world music plus creative arrangements that involve multiple drum kits(sets), marimba, fiddle, dancers and more.  Special guest “Drumheart” all Women Performing ensemble.  “Come join us!"
Tickets for the concert are available at www.brownpapertickets.com, www.womensdrumcenter.org  and locally at True Colors Bookstore 4755 Chicago Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55407, and the day of the concert.
